Rostro Alumna Katie Madson
February 14, 2025Board member and Advancement chair Jim Miller’s journey with Rostro de Cristo began when he was introduced to the organization by Sr. Evelyn Ronan, SND. Sr. Evelyn, who was the director of Faith Formation at Jim’s parish, St. John the Evangelist in Wellesley, MA, played a pivotal role in connecting him with the organization. Notably, Sr. Evelyn is the biological sister of Rostro de Cristo founder Fr. James Ronan. Jim’s friendship with Sr. Evelyn grew through his involvement in the parish’s faith formation programs, particularly during the Advent and Lent seasons.
Jim recalled, “When I was 45 or 50, I questioned my priorities.” Despite having a successful career, a loving family, and a beautiful home, Jim was searching for more. “My conversation with Sr. Evelyn during an event made me reevaluate my life. Her thought-provoking questions about my faith and priorities sparked a profound introspection that led to a transformative journey.”
In 2019, Sr. Evelyn proposed that Jim join a team going to Ecuador, led by Fr. Ronan. Initially Jim hesitated, due to his ongoing philanthropic commitments in Boston and his commitments at his parish, but Sr. Evelyn eventually swayed him. He recognized the potential for spiritual growth and personal development. “I responded to God’s nudging, and it changed my life” he said.
During their time in Ecuador, the team immersed themselves in the local community. Their itinerary included a visit to a local parish and to organizations where Rostro de Cristo Fellows dedicated their time. They visited a shelter for battered women, a school, and the humble homes of families residing adjacent to the home where Rostro de Cristo volunteers live. Additionally, they shared meals and meaningful conversations with retreat groups from two colleges who were also staying with Rostro de Cristo and being guided by the volunteers.

One poignant moment that left a lasting impression on Jim was the visit to a modest dwelling constructed from tin and scrap materials, with a dirt floor and rudimentary furnishings. This experience served as a reminder that despite differing material circumstances, the aspirations of the woman residing there mirrored those of any parent – a desire for a secure and prosperous future for her children.
Another impactful visit took place at a battered women’s shelter, where Rostro de Cristo volunteers provided essential support for the mothers and engaged with the children. Jim observed the cultural complexities and recognized the crucial need for a nurturing environment for these women. Reflecting on this, he came to understand that while the situation may seem dire, faith in God and the grace of the Holy Spirit can provide a beacon of hope in seemingly hopeless circumstances. “I realized that the theological definition of hope is the unwavering trust in God, particularly during challenging or seemingly impossible circumstances. It involves relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit rather than solely depending on one’s own strength.”
Throughout his journey with Rostro de Cristo, Jim underwent a profound transformation. He embraced diverse perspectives and immersed himself in unfamiliar cultures. He was deeply moved by the unwavering faith and jubilant celebrations of Jesus and the Eucharist during Mass, exhibited by the people he encountered.
Jim’s unwavering support for Rostro de Cristo is deeply rooted in his commitment to upholding and nurturing the Catholic faith. Having witnessed firsthand the profound impact of Rostro de Cristo’s volunteers and the students in the retreat groups, an impact that ignited the flame of faith and instigated positive change in their lives, Jim stands as a steadfast advocate for the organization’s mission.
