Rostro Alumna Katie Madson
February 14, 2025Clare Acosta actively engaged in a transformative retreat with Rostro de Cristo in Durán, Ecuador, during the summer of 2004, just prior to her senior year at the University of Scranton. This ten-day experience proved to be a pivotal moment in her life, reshaping her perspective on both her personal and professional aspirations. Immersed in the culture and community of Durán, Clare found herself inspired by the resilience and spirit of the people she met. “The ten days I spent in Durán ignited my passion and instilled in me an unquenchable desire to return to this vibrant community,” she reflected.
Following her graduation, Clare took significant steps to fulfill that desire by returning to Ecuador, where she dedicated herself to volunteering with Rostro de Cristo for two years. During this time, she not only contributed to local initiatives but also deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by the community and the powerful impact of solidarity and service.
Since returning, Clare worked in the campus ministry office at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, where she initiated a comprehensive educational experience emphasizing spiritual formation and community service. A highlight of this program was a transformative class that culminated in an immersive trip to Ecuador, organized in partnership with Rostro de Cristo.
At St. Mary’s Clare also extended her support to immigrant and undocumented students, providing essential resources and guidance as they navigated the complexities of university life. Her interactions with these students deeply resonated with her, sparking a profound interest in pursuing a legal career. Motivated to advocate for those often marginalized, Clare attended law school. Balancing this demanding academic pursuit with a full-time job, she committed herself to classes during the evenings and weekends for four years. Despite the chaos and challenges of her schedule, Clare remained resolute in her belief that this path was her calling—a vital opportunity to blend her passion for service with the pursuit of justice.
Clare has dedicated her life to advocating for those in need. Currently, she serves as a Staff Attorney at the San Antonio Legal Services Association, where she mobilizes legal volunteers to transform the lives of individuals in need. She is leading the Don’t Bully Me (DBM) Project in collaboration with David’s Legacy Foundation, assisting Texas families in crisis and advocating for the legal rights of minors experiencing cyberbullying.
“It has been twenty years since I volunteered with Rostro de Cristo, and that experience has influenced every aspect of my life. Every personal and professional decision I have made has been directly shaped by this experience.”
